The painter Claude Monet is famous for his waterlily paintings, but few know about the mastermind behind the plants themselves. Joseph Bory Latour-Marliac had discovered how to hybridise hardy white waterlilies with colourful varieties from all over the world. He set up a nursery, which caught the eye of Monet, who ordered waterlilies from there to fill the ponds at his famous home in Giverny. These beautiful flower ponds later set the scene for his renowned paintings, Les Nymphéas, now on display at the Orangerie Museum in Paris. You can visit Latour-Marliac’s original nursery in the Lot region, and see 300 varieties of waterlily in historical pools, explore botanical gardens, and enjoy refreshments at the café.
